*Before reading please go to this link to actually see what I'm talking about
This boy from Cambridgeshire, England, was frustrated that during hot weather the girls at his school could change into skirts, but the boys were prohibited from wearing shorts, leaving them stuck in long pants.
He decided to start wearing skirts to school in protest after looking at the school's rules. No where did it say that only girls were allowed to wear skirts.
This kid is super cool.
He did his research, he protested peacefully, and he was brave.
I've been meaning to post about skirts for men for a while. I'll say right now that I love them.
There is a lot of resistance to them, but there was a lot of resistance to women wearing pants as short as 100 years ago. At that time a woman wearing pants was just as crazy as a man wearing a skirt now. Every idea was at some point crazy. Without those crazy ideas we wouldn't have gotten anywhere. We take for granted electricity or television or even trousers on women because we don't realize how hard the pioneers of those things had to work to get their ideas out of "crazy" and into "cool".
The whole issue ties into how women are viewed in society. When women became able to wear pants, they were also becoming more independent. Voting and working were new rights they had acquired, and along with that came the need for pants. Pants were practical, but also bridged the gap between the two genders.
In the 80's Jean Paul Gaultier introduced skirts for men. Most were crosses between kilts and trousers. It's been 30 years and the movement hasn't gone anywhere. I can't help but notice that a lot of this stems from men not wanting to be like women. Women have no problem dressing in men's clothes. Being masculine is valued in society. However, most men would never be seen wearing a female's clothing, seeing as being feminine is not valued. Take the expression "grow a pair," obviously this does not refer to a pair of breasts. Masculine traits are the ideal.
For both genders to be truly equal, both of their traits and associations must be valued equally. It follows that when men and women can wear similar clothing it will be a sign of equality.
I'm not saying that there should be no gender distinctions. For example, women wear pants and men wear pants, but women's' trousers are extremely different form men's trousers. Both are pants, however one looks more feminine and one looks more masculine.
Plus they just look cool
