The other day in class I was watching the Dior haute couture S/S 2011 collection on YouTube. This girl came up and asked if she could watch it with me. After a couple seconds she said that it frustrated her that on runways they parade clothes no one can actually wear. This got me thinking about the whole purpose of Haute Couture, and why I love it so much. I explained what Haute Couture is compared to Ready-to-Wear, and by the end she said it was kind of cool.
I wonder why people object so strongly to Haute Couture yet think Ferraris are awesome. Isn't Haute Couture just the Bugatti of fashion?
Haute Couture is important for the same reason as art, or fast cars. To see where we can go, how far we can take whatever medium we work in.
This article by Colin McDowell in Ten Magazine winter/spring 2011 explains it better than I can. After I read it I got really emotional, because I was faced with the prospect of Haute Couture dying. If you click on the images you can read them.
