Hyp(hony)nose Drama

Do they honestly think we are stupid enough to think those eyelashes are real?
Yeah, you heard me makeup companies. That's right, we have brains.

I'm currently reading The Body Project by Joan Jacobs Brumberg.
It's about the history of American girls and their body image, self esteem, media crap, weight obsession, etc.
While reading it I feel like I have this power to look at a billboard and think "Sigh, I'll never look as beautiful as her... too bad she won't either, she must love Photoshop."
Take the clear skin mania. I've learned that this came from the Victorian era when acne was seen as an outward reflection of sexual perversion. The twenties morphed that into acne being poor and low class, leading into the fifties when marketers started preying on girls' insecurities about their skin to sell them acne products. Clearasil had a "Clearasil girl of the month" ad where girls sent in a picture and said how much the product changed their life and how their peers now complement them. Adolescents are very anxious about what their peers think, so tah-dah! That's a sale right there. Now we know where the skin craze comes from.

The title is a reference to the idea that today girls' bodies are their biggest project and focus.
That seems like a waste of time, no?
Have you noticed that guys ads are like "You are so cool that you get to use this product, in fact you deserve it!"
Girls ads are like "You are not cool, so to come even mildly close to coolness get this product."

That, or the guys ads are like "Let's put a sexy gal on here and that will sell the product somehow, even if it is just a toaster."

Also this and this might rock your world.
